Keeping the Bay Clean is No Accident...

In the 1950s and 1960s, the San Francisco Bay was seriously polluted. Today, the Bay is much cleaner because wastewater treatment facilities clean water before it reaches the bay.

Discharge to Bay

Purified wastewater is discharged through a 66 inch diameter pipeline to the submarine outfall diffuser about a mile offshore. The diffuser is located at a depth of 45 feet in the main shipping channel approximately 2 miles south of the San Mateo Bridge.
